An enjoyable lunch and lecture to bring Ashley Howard's Interplay to a close; made all the more special to have Dame Magdalane Odundo in attendance. Click for Delia Cabral's summary.
Ashley’s approach to ceramics is revolutionary. Influenced by his time in Japan and China, he refires pieces multiple times, fuses seemingly incompatible clays, and transforms traditional wheel-throwing into something entirely new. His understanding and mastery of clays and glazes allows him the freedom to capture and express motion in his large, groundbreaking vessels. This new series is based on his philosophy that objects exist in constant flux, subject to transformation and change, even in ceramics. He embraces and successfully embodies impermanence in what is traditionally perceived as a “permanent” medium, asking us to consider that everything is constantly evolving.
